Your guidebook for healing division in a polarized world.
Imagine a world beyond bias
At a time marked by polarization, bigotry, and growing divides, it’s easy to forget that biases are not inherent—they are learned, and they can be unlearned. What we need are tools to heal and bring people together.
Breaking Bias is an award-winning, best-selling book that blends neuroscience and meditation to help us restore connection and heal the divides that fracture our families, colleges, communities, and workplaces.
Breaking Bias is blessed with a Foreword by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, global advocate for compassion, and co-founder of the Mind & Life Institute
“I identify myself with his approach… and commend the author.”
His words remind us that rooting this work in compassion and shared humanity is both timely and timeless.

Breaking Bias was written for you—and for these urgent times
Whether you identify as Black or white, male or female, straight or gay, Christian or Atheist—or in ways beyond those labels—this book invites you on a journey to heal your relationship with yourself and with anyone the world tells you is “different.”
The need for this work has never been more urgent. Polarization, disinformation, and division are tearing at the fabric of our families, college campuses, workplaces, and nations. Yet within this turbulence lies a profound opportunity: to understand how our brains created these patterns—and how they can also free us from them.
Breaking Bias blends ancient wisdom with modern neuroscience to offer practical, somatically informed tools for unlearning bias. It will train you to recognize how separation is learned, to heal from its wounds, and to heal the polarization, division, and biases that fracture our families, colleges, universities, workplaces, and communities today.

Breaking Bias is your step-by-step guide, your toolkit, and your notepad for making change…all in one book.
Hi! I’m Anu, and I wrote Breaking Bias as the book I always wished I had—a practical guidebook for unlearning bias, fostering connection, and healing from experiences of exclusion and othering.
Unlike most books that simply examine the history of bias, Breaking Bias goes further: it offers practical, mindfulness-based training to help people actually unlearn bias. And it is the only book written from my perspective—shaped not only by decades of scholarship, but also by lived experience. As a gay, brown immigrant with Buddhist, Christian, and Hindu roots, an American lawyer, scientist, and lifelong meditation practitioner, I know both the pain of exclusion—including struggles with depression, anxiety, and even suicidality—and the possibility of healing.
My journey across cultures and continents, combined with my research and practice, gives me both the science and the story to guide this urgent work.
